CONTENTIOUS BILL
SMALL FARMS MEASURE OPPOSITION SUSTAINED IN HOUSE. INTRODUCTION OF HOSTILE - AMENDMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Discussion on the Small Farms Amendment Bill, which provides for the compulsory acquisition of land by the State, was continued in the House of Representatives yesterday. Urgency was again taken for the Bill to enable the debate to be continued to midnight. Arguments for and against the legislation were much the same as those advanced by speakers who took part in the debate the previous day. Late last night an amendment that the Bill be referred back to the Government for further consideration was moved on behalf of the Opposition by Mr. Dickie (Patca). Nine reasons were given in support of th'e amendment. It was claimed that the Discharged Sol • diers’ Settlement Act provided all the powers necessary for the acquisition of land for discharged soldiers, and that the Bill empowered the Government to confiscate land without payment of adequate compensation.
