£1,000,000 APPEAL
THE PATRIOTIC FUND. The main efforts of the committee, which is doing its best to ensure that Masterton raises its £B,OOO quota of the Patriotic Fund will be directed for some time to the Gala Day to be held in the Park Oval on Saturday, December 7. More assistance from the public in the matter of mystery and lucky packets and promises for cakes and sweets would be appreciated by the ladies’ committee. The appeal to employers and employees for voluntary contributions of a day’s pay has been completed, but the committee points out that .not much return can be expected before the end of the month. To push along the proceeds towards the local effort the organisers would suggest, to the public that they refrain from buying tickets in raffles, etc., not concerned with our district. Some from outside areas have been canvassing in this area. The committee slates that the art union for a house and section at Lower Hutt, and the raffle for a local section, car and bicycle are the only ones it is handling at present. The preparatory Work has been completed for an approach to be made to any who have not yet been canvassed through business firms. These people will be interviewed very shortly for their voluntary donations and the committee would be saved much work if contact were made by the donors with “John Bull Calls.’’ 'phone 1715, Perry Street. Last night the Masterton total had reached £590.
