A well-known resident of Hastings, both among pakehas and Maoris, Mr John Thomas Blake, has died at the age of 87. Among the Maoris he was known as Honi Pereki. Mr P. R. M. Hanna, general manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, has left Wellington on a visit to the Wairarapa, Hawke's Bay and Gisborne district branches.

Mr Frederick C. Bobby, an English poultry expert, has been appointed a superintendent of poultry husbandry in New Zealand, and will arrive in the Dominion shortly. The death of Mr Alexander Leonard Bellerby has occurred in Wairoa. Mr Bellcrby, who was 76 years of age, had been known for upward of 50 years to the Gisborne and Wairoa farming community.

Dr. Elizabeth Gregory, lecturer in chemistry of food and instruction in the home science department, Otago University, has been appointed dean of the faculty of home science in place of Professor Ann Strong, who recently retired.

Among the many parties given to Private Robert McNab, a well-known and popular Masterton resident who is at present on leave from Burnham Camp, was one held at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. McNab, Dixon Street, Masterton, last evening. The number of friends present was a tribute to the personal popularity of the guest of the evening. Dancing, singing and supper were enjoyed and toasts honoured. All joined in wishing Pvt. McNab a speedy and safe return.

Mr C. L. Mac Diarmid. Hamilton, at large gathering of Freemasons in the Town Hall, Wellington, last night, was installed as Grand Master of the Masonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand. The installing Grand Master was Mr C. J. Ronaldson, the Immediate Past Grand Master,. Mr Charles Flavell, Christchurch, was invested and inducted as Deputy-Grand Master by the Gover-nor-General, Viscount Galway, Past Grand P.G. Master. Mr A. W. Chapman (Masterton) was appointed assistant Provincial Grand Master.
