EKETAHUNA
PUBLIC DANCE SOLDIERS ENTERTAINED. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Public Hall was crowded last night on the occasion of a public dance tendered to eleven soldiers who are at present on leave. Visitors were present from Masterton, Pahiatua and the surrounding districts. Splendid music was provided by the Eketahuna Concert Orchestra and during the supper interval much appreciated extras were contributed by Mesdames W. N. Richardson, G. A. Hansen, and Messrs P. Holford and F. Robinson. In making a presentation of a gold watch each to the following local soldiers, Lance-Corporal N. Liardet, Privates R. Gordon, J. Kendall. R. E. Nielsen, V. Nielsen. W. Pearson, S. Petersen, G. Preston, B. Worthington, R. Ryan and I. W. Simpson, the Mayor. Mr W. Olsen, said that they had met once again to meet a fine lot of boys who had offered their services to the Empire in the most critical period of its history. The citizens of Eketahuna were proud of them and were sure that they would uphold the traditions of the Empire and of Eketahuna. On behalf of the citizens he wished them God speed, good health and a safe return to Eketahuna.
The assemblage accorded the guests musical honours, after which the recipients returned thanks for the gifts and good wishes. Mr G. A. Hansen, on behalf of the Kaiparoro Patriotic Committee, made a presentation to Privates J. Monaghan, S. Petersen and V. Neilsen •on behalf of Kaiparoro settlers. He wished them a safe return and the best of luck.
Exhibition dances were performed by Private M. McMullin and Mr W. Brown during the evening and were well received.
The supper arrangements were in the capable hands of the Borough Ladies’ Committee. The M.’sC. for the function were Messrs H. E. Greathead and V. Wimsett.
PATRIOTIC FUND HEART-TO-HEART APPEAL. The following is an additional list of donors to the recent Heart-to-Heart Appeal (the total now amounts to £383 Ils and it is expected that the i full amount of £4OO required will be reached within the next few days):— Anonymous £1; Mrs F. This should have been £lO. BOWLING PAHIATUA CLUB'S SUCCESS. The Pahiatua Bowling Club holds both the senior and junior Ruahine Pennants as a result of the games played at Woodville on Monday. In the senior competition the points aggregates were: Pahiatua 149, Woodville 149, Dannevirke 105, Eketahuna 101. Pahiatua were declared the winners, having six wins to Woodville's three. Among the juniors Pahiatua scored 141, Dannevirke 123. Woodville 102 and Eketahuna 82. Pahiatua won outright.
FIRE AT HAMUA SCHOOLHOUSE DESTROYED. On Sunday afternoon the Hamua Schoolhouse was totally destroyed by a fire which was first discovered at about 3.45 o’clock. After fruitless attempts had been made to enter the building, the house and its contents had to be abandoned as a total loss. By 4.20 o’clock the house was razed to the ground. The school, a short distance away, was not damaged. The occupants of the house, Mr and Mrs E. J. Harris, were away at the time. The fire appeared to start somewhere in the kitchen which was the first portion of the house to collapse. The house and furniture were insured.
Concert Orchestra. Members of the Ekatahuna Concert Orchestra met last night to entertain one of its members, Lance-Corporal Noel Liardet. The leader, Mr P. Bouzaid, in making a presentation of a smoker's companion to the guest, tendered the congratulations of the band’s members on his recent marriage anc thanked him for the help and inspiration he had given the combination since its inception three years ago. The members deeply regretted his going and the speaker assured Mr Liardet they would always remember him and wished him the best of luck and a safe return. The guest’s health was then toasted and musical honours accorded. Mr Liardet briefly but feelingly returned thanks.
