CARTERTON
TOWN AFFAIRS MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presiding. There were also present: Councillors E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart, H. Mortenson. C. J. DeLacey, O. W. Wolters, R. A. Copeland, and the Town Clerk. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors J. Udy, L. M. Clark, and C. E. Stevens. The treasurer reported a debit bal'ance at the Bank of New Zealand of £215 8s 7d in the district fund. A credit balance of £384 Ils lid was shown in the gasworks account. Advice was received that the Municipal Conference would be held in Auckland from March 3 to March 6, 1941. The Public Trust Office wrote regarding the proposed stock road through the Bicknell Estate property. The secretary of the Masterton Picture and Entertainment Company wrote asking that the licence of the State Theatre be cancelled. After discussion it was resolved that the clerk write notifying the company that it could not acede to the request. The finance committee, works committee and gas committees’ reports were adopted. It was resolved that casual labour be employed clearing grass from footpaths in the borough and that broom be grubbed up in Pembroke Street. Taylor Street, Wakelin Street, and Costly Street. It was agreed that the clerk obtain a quotation for the supply of dog collars. The culvert at the junction of Garrison and Pembroke streets is to be lengthened by the borough staff. It was decided that the clerk arrange for two men to control traffic in the borough between Pembroke Street and Belvedere Street on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. No traffic whatsoever is to be allowed in the town between the above mentioned streets. The next meeting of the council will be held on Tuesday, December 17.
DANCE FOR SOLDIERS PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the Carterton Patriotic Committee was held in the Borough Council buildings yesterday afternoon, the Mayor, Mr Taverner, presiding. There were also present: Mesdames E. M. Gayfer; A. T. Murray, P. L. Beere, Miss V. Tucker and Messrs E. McKenzie, W. A. Hart and B. H. Gayfer. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames L. J. Fairbrother, M. O’Reilly and R. N. Campbell, and Messrs Geo. Brown, L. J. Fairbrother, and H. B. Keenan. It was decided that a public function in the form of a dance be held in the King's Theatre. Carterton, on Fridayevening next. The prices for admission were fixed at: Men, 2s 6d; ladies, Is and a basket. It was agreed that the Girls’ Club be approached to render a programme of songs, etc. Mrs V. J. Ashton is to be engaged tb supply the music for the dancing. Brief speeches are to be made by the Mayor (Mr Taverner), Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., and Mr A. T. Murray, president of the Carterton R.S.A. Invitations are to be extended to soldiers and their wives. A working bee will be held at 5 o'clock on Thursday to put the dancing floor in order and make other arrangements.
CALF CLUB JUDGING OF SCHOOL EXHIBITS. The annual exhibition of calves and lambs was held on the Carterton school grounds yesterday and proved a great success. There was a large attendance of parents and competition among the children was very keen. The judges, Messrs M. J. Parker (calves) and J. Fisher (lambs) were agreeably surprised at the quality of the animals brought forward for judging. Mr Les Gallon has very kindly donated a cup for the champion calf awards. The conditions are that the <*°cup is to be won three times, not necessarily in succession, before it becomes the absolute property of the successful competitor. Flora Sexton 3. Phyllis Robertson 4. GIRLS’ CLUB SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. Members of the Carterton Girls’ Club repeated their excellent revue last evening in the King’s Theatre to a large audience. The programme suomitted was similar to that produced last week. Every item on the programme was well received and loudly encored and many recalls were demanded. As a result of the entertainment the patriotic funds vzill materially benefit. Soldier on Leave. Clareville residents on Friday night will tender a social evening and pre-> sentation to Private Les Wiley, an old
boy of the Clareville School, who is at present on leave from military camp. Harvesting Hay. Farmers .who have had their hay cut on several farms in the district are taking advantage of the good weather to have it harvested and hay presses were busy from daylight till dark yesterday. The yield is very heavy. Personal. Miss Molly Davies, of Wellington, who has recently returned from America, has been spending a holiday with her aunt, Mrs Moncrief!, of Carterton. Miss L. Edwards, of Park Road. Carterton, is spending a short holiday I with Mrs Higginson, of Eketahuna.
