SHIPPING & FOOD

BRITAIN’S PROBLEMS CONFIDENCE IN ULTIMATE SOLUTION. SOME RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, November 26. It is authoritatively stated that it should not be inferred from the reduced shipping losses that we have overcome the menace from both submarines and air attacks, but it is felt that we shall eventually conquer the problems. Indications of food difficulties came from several quarters today. The Food Minister (Lord Woolton), in a speech, appealed to the public to be careful in using milk for the next two months, although rationing was not proposed. An official order prohibits the use of liquid milk, including skimmed milk, in the manufacture of ice cream, from December 1. The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Hudson), in the House of Commons, said a further increase in Home food production was vital, particularly edible crops and milk. Lord Woolton also pointed out that the shortage of sweets was due to the restriction on sugar available for the manufacture of these. The scarcity of slab chocolate was due to members of the auxiliary fire services and canteen workers receiving priority. The Colonial Office has informed the country’s largest banana importers that no more licences are being granted to import bananas into Britain.
