UNDER SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME. GOVERNMENT’S REPORTED INTENTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. * The introduction on January 1 of the general practitioner service provided for in the Social Security Act, passed two years ago. is believed to be contemplated by the Government, and an amendment to the Act is to be brought before the House of Representatives this session. The first mention of this amendment was made yesterday at a caucus of the Government Party. No details were given, but ,’.t is understood that all contributors to the Social Security Fund will be eligible for the benefits. No statement on the progress of the negotiations between the Minister of Health, Mr. Armstrong, and the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association has been issued since Mr. Armstrong submitted his scheme to the representatives of the doctors some months ago. A few weeks ago. in Wanganui. the Minister suggested that the introduction of the general practitioner proposals would not be long delayed, and when interviewed within the past few days he replied: “We are getting the scheme in order. The public will get the service.”
