WILL NEVER BE PUT DOWN

BY HITLER AND HIS BARBARIANS. THE SPIRIT OF ENGLAND. Writing from somewhere in England to a relative in Masterton a Masterton soldier states: We are in our new billets at last and they are not so bad. There are three drivers attached to our company and we three have a room to ourselves, which is quite nice. There is a fireplace in it and a wireless set, so we are O.K. for now that the weather is getting colder, it is ever so much better than being outside. We quite a lot of thrills here lately. There was a most exciting dog fight right over us and they brought down one of Hitler’s crack fighters right next to us. I got quite a good photo of the plane. Thanks for the parcel, I can do with the sox and was just starting out to buy one or two things, when someone told me there was an overseas mail and parcel for me. Your goods were what I was going to buy. The cigarettes I enjoyed. I went over to see Jack Cooper. England is agreeing with him for he is looking very fit and well. In Kent the hop picking is in full swing. When we were coming down here a woman on the roadway called out. “Are any of your boys from the Wairarapa.” Unfortunately I was driving and could not stop and I happened to be the only one just them from Wairarapa, I have often wished I knew who she was. The people here I are just wonderful. In another dog fight I saw a German baled out from about 25,000 feet. We were hoping the wind would bring him near enough for us to get him, but we had no luck. Some of the Huns do not land too well. I slept through two air raids and did not not hear “Wailing Winnie.” (the siren). When the alarm is sound folks generally run to a shelter, but some don’t bother, they just stand and watch, trusting in Providence. We are giving Hitler a dose of his own medicine, and he doesn’t like it. The way the people come out of the debris after a raid and carry on is marvellous. They will never be put down by Hitler and his barbarian followers.
