SCHOOL AFFAIRS
MASTERTON WEST. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Masterton West School Committee was held in Masterton. last night. Mr E. R. Rogers presided and there were also present Messrs Tooby, Graham, Haybittle. Baird, Campbell. Gilbert, Shearer and the headmaster, Mr J. P. Farrell. Accounts amounting to £3O 3s 6d were passed for payment. Mr Haybittie. the committee’s representative on the Dental Clinic Committee, reported on the objects of the clinic committee. He was assured of the full support of his committee. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Rogers, Haybittie and Farrell was set up to attend to the school’s obligations to the controlling body. Several members expressed the wish that the Lord’s Prayer should be said at the opening of school every morning. Mr Farrell outlined the attitude of the Teachers’ Institute, and the matter was left in his hands.
The visiting members reported that several matters required attention. The school baths were ready for use. A discussion took place on various types of heating for the new school, but. nothing was decided on. The Parents’ Association are to be asked to supervise the supper arrangements at the break-up ceremony. A grant of £5 was made towards necessities for the function. It was decided to ask Mr W. V. Madden to officiate as Father Christmas.
The chairman expressed the desirability of keeping the parents in touch with school matters, and it was decided that a half-yearly circular setting out matters of interest be forwarded to parents. It was agreed that the member for the district. Mr J. Robertson, be coopted in expediting matters in connection with the new school. "The roll number is now 357 and the attendance is very good,” reported the headmaster. Mr J. P. Farrell. The school baths had been filled but the water was too cold yet for swimming.! Two men had started on the ground] improvement scheme. All books for! the school library had been received. The ten members of the staff had donated a day’s salary to the Patriotic Appeal. For the breaking-up function this year the staff had suggested entertaining the parents at an evening function to consist of items prepared by the children during the ordinary school routine. The report was adopted.
