CARTERTON

LEAGUE OF MOTHERS “FATHERS' NIGHT.” (“Times-Age” Special.) Last evening the Masonic Hall was well filled when members of the League of Mothers entertained the “Fathers” at a social. Mrs R. H. Every, president of the League of Mothers, occupied the chair. The programme was opened by the mothers’ hymn “Oh Perfect Love,” followed by a prayer. Mrs Every extended a welcome lo those present and said how pleased the League members were to see such a good attendance. She specially welcomed the representatives of other women’s institutions. The policy of the League of Mothers was to aim at high ideals, to do good to everyone, and, best of all, to keep the home life pure. Mrs Every said that they had with them members of the Masterton League of Mothers' choir who would entertain with singing. Mrs Every made mention of the recent deaths of Mrs J. D. Hunt and Mr A. F. Pink and asked ali to stand in silence for a few moments as a mark of sympathy with the relatives. This having been done Mrs Every referred to the work the various women’s institutions were doing in knitting woollen comforts for soldiers serving in the forces. This work was t£e least they could do for the soldiers. Funds for the purchase of wool were always required and she made an appeal for donations to be placed in a box at the door. The following programme was then rendered and each item enthusiastically applauded:— “Morning Invitation,” "Ghosts of Little White Roses,” Masterton League of Mothers’ choir; solo, “Early in the Morning,” Mrs Traynor; duet, “Love is Meant to Make us Glad,” Mesdames Snowsill and Burke; “O Peaceful England.” "The Viking Song,” choir. The choir was under the baton of Mrs Miller Hope. Mr W. Martin, headmaster of the Carterton District High School, gave a very interesting address on spiders and referred at length on trap-door species of which there were at least 8 different varieties in New Zealand. He was listened to with interest throughout and was warmly applauded at the end of his address. Votes of thanks to the Masterton Choir and to Mr Martin were carried by acclamation. Mrs H. E. Ordish (president of the Women’s Division) and Mrs H. Knutson (Women's Institute) thanked the League of Mothers for the invitation to be present. Mr W. C. M. Sorensen, on behalf of the “Fathers” thanked the League of Mothers for the splendid social tendered to them. The National Anthem was then sung and supper handed round.
