ROYAL CHIEF

AN IMPRESSIVE RECORD. With a total of more than £lB,OOO in stakes, Royal Chief has entered the list of New Zealand’s biggest stakeearners, and as it is intended to carry on with him until after the autumn period, provided nothing happens to him in the meantime, there is every possibility he will add a considerable sum to his aggregate. The idea of taking him to Australia in the autumn has not been discussed as yet, but if he should hold his present excellent form, it may be decided to give him another opportunity to earn further distinction across the Tasman. Royal Chief’s complete record to date is as follows: —

Jewish Lad. Since Jewish Lad has been an inmate of L. C. Gough’s stable at Riccarton. he has made a great deal of improvement in his stamina. He was well handled in both of his races at Riccarton by H. Hibberd, who is developing into a first-class horseman over fences and has won several races on Jewish Lad.

Milford Given Away. After the second hurdle race at Riccarton last week Messrs J. S. and W. E. Hazlett gave away Milford, and in future he will be used as a lady’s hack. Now 10 years old, Milford, who had a good career on the flat, has never taken kindly to hurdling and each day at Riccarton he spoiled any chance he might have had by jumping badly.

New Horse in Team. A. McMillian has a. new horse in his team at Riccarton, one of his clients having secured Stock Exchange on lease. He is a three-year-old by Myosotis from Bourse, a Limond mare from Commerce, a daughter of Safeguard, a well-known Stonyhurst matron. Though he gallops well on the tracks, Stock Exchange has been a disappointment, so far, in his races.

All Night to be Spelled. W. McDonald was very unlucky when All Night broke clown near the finish of the Linwood Handicap at Riccarton, as he was going like a winner at the time. He is to be turned out, but it is hoped he will come back, after a good spell, with reasonable prospects of standing another preparation. Dictate. Dictate was galloped on in the New Zealand Cup, and as he was also suffering from a bruised foot he could I not be raced again at the Riccarton carnival. He has made good progress, and it is hoped he will be ready to show form at the Ashburton meeting next week. Manchester Handicap. The following arc the weights for the Manchester Handicap, l.jm, at the Feilding meeting:—Old Bill 9.10; Friesland 8.9; Meamea 8.4; Ned Cuttie 8.2; Aurora’s Star, Du Maurier 8.1; Homily 7.13; Trench Law 7.9; Areas. Ruatiti 7.7; Rollickcr 7.5; Anita Foe 7.4; Kilometre 7.3; Charles Edward 7.2; Hunting Cat 7.1; Windsor Chief. Dark Eagle. Siglow. Cherry Bay. Charing Cross, Defy 7.0. Pay P,oH’s Winnings. From the viewpoint of stake winnings, Pay Roll is away ahead of any other two-year-old so far. She has won £1295, and she also has the unusual record of sharing two stakes, one in Auckland and one at Riccarton, where she dead-heated with Nuna and Corn Prince respectively. Another remarkable feature of the juvenile season is that the ex-Opaki trained filly is followed on the winning list by three other Trentham youngsters, two of them her stablemates. Par Avion has won £570, Foreign Coin £5OO and Corn Prince £435. So far there are 19 two-year-old winners of 25 races. Death of Morning Light. When jumping the last hurdle of a once-round trial at Hastings yesterday. Morning Flight dislodged his rider, C. Bevan. Running loose and endeavouring to get through a gap leading from the hurdle track, he crashed into a post and broke his near foreleg, which necessitated his destruction.
