CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE
High Class Horses in Auckland Cup (BY “THE GRAFTER.”) The interest of racing circles will now be centred on the weights to be allotted for the Auckland Cup run on Boxing Day. A formidable list of nominations was received, including Royal Chief, Beau Vite, Beau Leon, Old Bill, The Buzzer, Yogi, Tauranga, and Gladynev. There is no maximum attached to the Auckland Cup, and it is generally assumed that Beau Vite will be called upon to give Royal Chief a little weight, and that the former will get about 9.10. Nightmarch, after winning the New Zealand Cup in 1930 with 9.6, was awarded 9.13 at Ellerslie, and was unplaced. Nightmarch had won the Melbourne Cup a year before, and as neither Beau Vite nor Royal Chief has had either Cup to his credit, it is reasonable to suggest that this year’s handicap will start at a lower scale than adopted in Nightmarch’s year.
