BALANCE OF PARTIES
POSITION VERY DIFFICULT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY. November 18. With a lead of 3300 votes and only 14,000 more votes to be counted. Mr. V. Johnson (official Labour) seems to be certain to win the Kalgoorlie byelection for the Federal Parliament. The result is vitally important to Mr. Menzies, the Prime Minister, as, owing to the death today of Mr. Henry Gregory (M.H.R., Country Party), if Mr. Johnson is successful the state of the parties when the House meets will be: Labour, 36; Government, 35; Independents, 2; and the Government from its total must appoint the Speaker. Tremendous interest now centres in the -late Mr. Gregory’s seat, the Swan electorate in Western Australia. There is no certainty that the Country Party will retain it, as it has been regarded as the weakest Government seat in Western Australia. Mr. Gregory’s majorities were never large and contained many personal votes which will not necessarily go to the new Country Party candidate.
