UNCEASING EFFORT
ONLY WAY TO VICTORY. Let us never give ourselves up again to mere hoping and complacency and blind faith in our star, comments the Labour newspaper the “Daily Herald.” Effort, unceasing, unremitting and tenacious to the end, is the only way up the story ascent to victory. And let us remember this. Though we may very well defend ourselves, we shall never liberate Europe by our own exertions alone. Before the offensive campaigns of 1941 and 1942, of which Mr Churchill has spoken, begin, we must set ourselves to fan systematically the glowing embers of revolt which Hitler’s pitiless brutality is kindling throughout the desert which he has made of Europe. That work of revolution has hardly yet begun. But unless the British Government takes it in hand with the same will and energy that transformed the war effort in the past four months, we may have saved ourselves, but we shall not be mtich nearer winning the victory all peoples crave for, by September 3, 1941.
