That 300 people were at Lyttelton to welcome the Canterbury’ Pilgrims when they arrived on December 16, 1850, was mentioned by Mr C. R. Straubel in an address to the Christchurch Rotary Club. These earlier arrivals included a number of European workmen, who had been engaged for up to 18 months previously under Captain Joseph Thomas in road works and survey parties and putting up the various official buildings and the jetty. Then there were many who had come down from Wellington and Nelson waiting to take up sections or to begin business as soon as the new settlement was established.
