OBITUARY
MR ALFRED FORBES PINK
The death occurred suddenly last evening of Mr A. F. Pink, a highly respected citizen of Carterton. Deceased, since he broke a leg some time ago, has not enjoyed the best of health. He was at his shop yesterday, being in his usual jovial spirits. After having tea he had a sudden seizure and died almost immediately. The late Mr Pink as a youth was employed by Dr. D. G. Johnston, long before the advent of motor-cars and day and night drove the doctor to see his patients. After leaving the doctor’s employ he worked for the W.F.C.A. for many years. He then entered into partnership with Mr H. Hall in a grocery business. After this business had closed down deceased opened a small grocery shop near the Bank of New South Wales, which he conducted up till the time of his death. He was an ardent Friendly Society member and for years had been associated with the local Court of Foresters, having filled all the offices with distinction. At the time of his death he was treasurer, a position he had held for years. He had been a member of the Carterton Bowling Club for a long period. The late Mr Pink was born in the Hutt Valley, but has lived in the Carterton district since early boyhood. He is survived by a widow and four brothel s and a sister. The brothers are Messrs Fred W. ((Levin), Arthur (Palmerston Ernest (Levin). Edgar (Levin), and the sister Mrs R. Purcell, of Palmerston North, to all of whom the deepest sympathy will be extended. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the residence, Park Road, after a service at 1.15 p.m. for the Clareville Cemetery.
Child Scalded. The little child of Mr and Mrs Mansell, of Pembroke Street, Carterton, had the misfortune to receive bad burns as the result of being scalded yesterday. The child, it is understood, upset a cup of hot tea over his chest. Dr. Wells was called in and after medical attention the child was sent to the Masterton Hospital for treatment. Heart-to-Heart Appeal. An appeal is being made in Carterton in connection with raising ,£1,000,000 to help the United Kingdom and Empire overseas, and for the benefit of New Zealand troops overseas and within the Dominion. Gifts for Soldiers. The Belvedere and Carrington residents will hold a dance in the Belvedere Schoolroom on Friday evening next, the proceeds from which will be devoted towards buying gifts for soldiers. The prices for admission are advertised and there should be a record attendance. P. and A. Society. On Saturday the monthly meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society will be held at 10.30 a.m. The business will include a report on the recent show and sugfor its improvement. Personal. Mrs A. C. Tucker, of Rhodes Street, Carterton, has found it necessary to enter the Masterton Public Hospital for treatment. Mr E. Kilmister, of Kent Street, Carterton. is confined to his bed through illness. Tennis Club. A deputation from the Carterton Bowling Green Lawn Tennis Club waited upon the management committee of the Bowling Club on Monday night and requested assistance for the tennis department of the club. After the deputation had stated its case it was decided that the tennis club manage its own affairs and pay the Bowling Club rent for the use of the grounds; the proposition to be reviewed at the end of the season. New Dwelling. A commodious dwelling house is being erected in Pembroke Street. Carteuton. for Mr J. Leggett, by Messrs KiiUtson and Jamieson, builders. Brown Beetles. In some gardens in Carterton last evening swarms of brown beetles were in evidence. Lawns were alive with the insects, and they soon stripped the tender top foliage of trees.
