ELUSIVE ENEMY
LATEST BRITISH CRUISE IN MEDITERRANEAN NO ITALIAN WARSHIPS SIGHTED. BOMBING PLANES DEFEATED WITH LOSS. A correspondent reports, the 8.8. C. states, that the attack by Fleet Air Arm aircraft on Sardinia occurred during a naval cruise of 2,000 miles in the course of which the British ships did not once sight an Italian surface ship or make contact with Italian submarines. The first enemy plane to appear was shot down. A second shared the same fate. Then two large formations of Italian bombers appeared, flying at a height of 16,000 feet. The guns of every ship roared into life. No damage was done to any of the ships by bombs and there were no casualties. For many hours the British ships cruised within easy reach of enemy ships and planes, but none of these appeared. The British squadron eventually returned safely to harbour.
