Pay Roll, whose success in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton was one of the most decisive in recent years, was bred by her owner. Mr T. Newman. The dam, Zarisee. was bred at Kinloch. and was at one time raced by Mr G. Murray-Aynsley. She is by Paladin from Mazabuka, an imported mare by Chaucer, from Pitcroy by
Minting from Chatelaine by Bend Or from Chanoinesse by Newminster. Croupier, sire of Pay Roll, was a brilliant galloper, and won several races including the Wanganui Guineas, Harcourt Cup, and Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap (winning by three lengths in the track record time of Imin 37 3-ssec). He is by Surveyor from Pellet by Thurnham from Pell by Hymettus, and is a member of the No. 19 family which has produced many good racehorses including Spion Kop. Salmon Trout. Gallinule, Tracery. Isonomj'. Windsor Lad and others.
Racehorse Destroyed. The four-year-old gelding Coup d’Etat, by Nightmarch from the Bisogne mare Niazone, was destroyed at Riccarton on Saturday after breakink a fetlock when working on the plough. He was bred and was owned by Miss D. M. Stewart, at present in England, and has been raced on a few occasions on her behalf. He was trained by P. V. Mason, and had shown promise of becoming useful.
Good Apprentice Rider. Twelve months ago the New Zealand Cup was won on Yours Truly by the apprentice Mudford, then rising to the prominent place in his profession that he now occupies. It was thus a coincidence that this year on Serenata the Cup should again have been won by another particularly good apprentice in S. Waddell, who is apprenticed to G. W. New. at Awapuni. This was by no means the first time that Waddell has shown he is a capable rider, but it was, of course, by far his greatest success to date. Waddel is 17 years old, and can go to the scale at 6.7. It was his first ride in the New Zealand Cup, the same as Mudford last year, and he says his next ambition is to ride the winner of the Melbourne Cup. Waddell only began race riding last season, but he finished the term with 22 winners.
