A Great Contest. Marlene won the New Zealand Trotting Cup at Addington yesterday in the manner of a. little champion, for, though she was decidedly lame on returning to the enclosure, she showed the greatest gameness in her fight with Dusky Sound over the last furlong. It ' was only yesterday morning that Mr C. S. Donald, acting under the advice of a veterinary surgeon, decided to start the mare. She had been hurt while in the paddock and was heavily bandaged. She does not appear likely to make another appearance at the meeting. It marked Mr Donald’s first win in New Zealand’s most important race, and the first by his brother, R. Donald, as reinsman. Dusky Sound, like Marlene, had had an interrupted preparation, and the stoppage in his work left him just short of the necessary stamina at the end of the race. Marlene found the race run to suit her, for. with others making the pace, she was allowed to unwind a brilliant burst, of speed. The race was run at a fairly solid pace from the start. The first half was run in 1.6 1-5. and a slightly increased pace showed Horse Power registering 2.11 2-5 for a mile. The mile and a quarter was run in 2.43 3-5. the mile /and a half in 3.15 4-5, and the full journey in 4.18 3-5. making the last half in 1.3. While the Cup was not the most sensational in history, it provided a most exciting race over the final stages and showed the stamina and gameness of two really good horses. Unfortunate Development. All Night was going well a furlong from home in the Linwood Handicap at Riccarton. and 100 yards from the post appeared as if he would win, but he broke down nearing the line, and was very lame on returning to the birdcage. He had given his trainer, W. McDonald, a lot of trouble in the last few weeks, and had to be restricted in his track work. All Night, who is by Nightly, indicated by his two wins at Geraldine that he was the makings of a high-class stake-earner, and it will be a matter of regret if his trouble should prove to be serious.
