TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

BIRTHDAY PARTY. ENJOYABLE GATHERING YESTERDAY. The fifth birthday party of the Townswomen's Guild was held yesterday afternoon in the Savage Club rooms. Mrs Bennett presided over a large attendance of members and friends. The stage was artistically decorated by the members of the Gardening Circle. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode, the reciting of the Aspirations and the Prayer for Peace. On behalf of the Guild members, Mrs Snowsill presented a bouquet to the president. Each member of the committee and each Circle leadei’ was presented with a shoulder spray. Mrs Dagg as a representative of the Townswomen’s Guild on the Dental Clinic Committee presented her report, and Mrs Judd reported on the work of the Patriotic Committee.

The candles on the two-tier birthday cake were lit by Mrs Walker, a foundation member, and extinguished by Mrs Judd, the vice-president. The cake was then cut by the president. The top tier of the cake was won by Mrs Trevorrow, and the prize for the lucky seat was won by Mrs Parsons. Mrs Miller won the prize for the grandmother who had the greatest number of grandchildren. The Musical Circle contributed two part songs, “Heigh Ho” and “Greeting to Spring,” under the baton of Miss D. O'Donnell. A delicious afternoon tea was served by the committee. The presentation of a dramatised reading of the play, “For Amusement Only,” was a special feature of the gathering. The cast consisted of Mesdames Hair, Jarvis, Douglas, Pickering Showier, Brown and Whittaker. A fine display of articles made by the members of the Arts and Crafts Circle were on view. A most enjoyable gathering was concluded with the singing of the Ode and the National Anthem.
