EKETAHUNA

NIREAHA TENNIS CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the annual meeting of the Nireaha Tennis Club Mr E. Neiderer presided. The balance sheet showed a small credit. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron. Mr H. E. Greathead: president, Mr E. Neiderer; vice-presi-dents, Messrs C. H. Mills and C. W. Hercock; secretary, Mr C. Hansen; auditor. Mr J. L. Daysh. Cup day was fixed for the first Sunday in February. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY PARTY AT HAMUA. The tenth birthday of the Hamua Women’s Institute was celebrated in the Hamua Hall with a dance. Owing to the number of counter attractions the attendance was not as large as usual, but the gathering was a most enjoyable one. A play by the Eketahuna Drama Circle. “Cousin Lucy,” was excellently presented and was warmly applauded. Novelty dances were won as follows: Monte Carlo. Miss White and Mr Groube; lucky spot. Miss Ryan and Mr E. O’Brien. After supper and before cutting the cake. "God Defend Nev; Zealand” and “The Ode to Friendship" were sung by all present. The president, Mrs Hobbs, was presented by Mrs Cavanagh with a posy made by Mrs White. Mrs Hobbs presented the two vice-presidents. Mesdames Carruthers and Cavanagn. the treasurer, Miss F. Smith, and secretary. Mrs Galvin, with shoulder sprays. She then called on Mrs F. Schormann, secretary of the Bush Federation, to light the candles and Mrs Wards (Mangamaire) to blow them out. Mrs D. Fraser, president for Eketahuna, then cut the cake. Greetings were received from each of the above representatives and also Mrs Wenham (Hukanui).

Mrs Tait provided splendid music for the dancing and Mr R. Bourke made a capable M.C.

OBITUARY MR ERNEST KERR. Mr Ernest Kerr, whose death occurred at Masterton on Saturday, was born at Brightwater, Nelson, 66 years ago. He joined the Railway Department as a serviceman at Nelson and some 17 years ago was transferred to Mangamahoe as ganger, residing there until 18 months ago when he retired and came to Eketahuna. As a young man the late Mr Kerr was a noted cricketer in the Nelson district. He represented .that province on many occasions, and played against Lord Hawke’s team. He saw service in the South African war, and was a member- of the Wakefield branch of the M.U. Odd Fellows’ Lodge. Possessing a kindly nature, the deceased was held in high esteem by his many friends in the Mangamahoe district and in Eketahuna. A wife, four sons, Messrs A. D. (Waverley), E. (Mangamahoe), G. T. and C. H. (Weber) and three daughters, Mesdames L. L. Preston (Mosgiel) and A. C. Stantiall (Marton) and Miss C. Kerr (Eketahuna) are left to mourn their loss. There are also eleven grandchildren. The funeral took place at the Eketahuna cemetery yesterday afternoon. The Rev L Ives officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were the four sons of the deceased and Messrs A. C. Stantiall (son-in-law) and A. W. Small of Ohau (brother-in-law). The attendance included a large number of former workmates of the deceased. Many beautiful floral wreaths were received. Patriotic Card Party. At the monthly card party held by the Nireaha Patriotic Committee the winners of the prizes were as follow: — Ladies: Miss Betty Petersen, 1; consolation. Miss Jean Goss. Men: Mr J. Burr, 1; consolation, Master lan Terry. Outbreak of Measles. Several cases of measles are reported at Nireaha and in parts of the Eketahuna district.
