CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge of Odd Fellows was held last night and presided over by Sister Eagle. Sick pay amounting to £ll 6s 3d and other accounts amounting to £25 17s lid were passed for payment. Sister Prout, secretary of the Loyal Masterton Juvenile Lodge, wrote extending an invitation to a fancy dress ' dance to be held on Saturday, December 14. The letter was received and wpl be dealt with at the quarterly summoned meeting to be held on November 25. One member declared on the sick funds of the lodge. Information was received that Bro. A. V. Tunnicliffe, ol Rotorua, had successfully undergone an operation. Bro. Sparks, of Hukanui, notified that he had been discharged from the Pahiatua Hospital, but would be an outpatient for some time. The District Secretary wrote enclosing the sixty-third annual report of the Registrar of the Friendly Societies for year ended December, 1939, which showed the total funds of the societies and branches to be £5,407,601, the Manchester Unity Order being in the forefront in all respects, having a membership total in New Zealand of 37,519, considerably above any other society in the Dominion. The following nominations for office were received: —N.G., Sister F. Eagle; V.G., Bros. C. J. Fisher and H. J. Rathbone; E.S., Bro. G. S. Bruce; warden, Bros. Fisher, Rathbone, White and Sister Mellish; conductor, Bros. White, Rathbone, Tankersley, Fisher and Sister Mellish; lecture’master, Bros. DeLacey. Bruce, Fisher, White, Rathbone, Tankersley and Sister Mellish.

RETURNED SOLDIERS CARTERTON BRANCH SOCIAL. Last evening between fifty and sixty members of the Carterton Branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association gathered at the Carterton Bandroom where a social was held.. The gathering was opened with the singing of the National Anthem, after which the chairman (Mr H. T. Murray) extended a hearty welcome to those present. A programme of vocal and other items was greatly enjoyed. Songs were given by Messrs W. Johansen, M. Ardrey, Alan Goulden, and L. Darke, while a community sing was led by M. Ardrey. Mr Chatwin was encored for a character recitation and Mr H. T. Ray mystified those present with his tricks, being warmly applauded. Four new' members were elected. At the conclusion of the programme the chairman thanked those who had assisted to make the social such a success, and Mr P. L. Darke for playing the accompaniments. Supper was later provided. WOMEN’S DIVISION CARTERTON BRANCH MEETING. The monthly meeting of. the Carterton Branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union was presided over by Mrs. H. E. Ordish. There was a good attendance of members. A letter was received from the League of Mothers thanking the Branch for a parcel of knitted goods. A letter from a member of the Royal Navy was read wherein he thanked members for the parcel of woollen comforts he had received. A display of cut blooms and. shrubs will be made at the next monthly meeting of the branch. The competitions resulted as follows: ■ —Best bloom, Mrs. E. W. Allen, 1; Mrs. G. Couper, 2; Mrs. E. W. Allen, 3. Best shrub, Mrs. E. W. Allen, 1; Mrs. G. Couper, 2; Mrs. J. Taplin, 3. 1 Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames S. Swann, M. E. Mellish. F. O'Keefe, K. Hodder. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.

INSTITUTE MEETING MATARAWA-DALEFIELD The monthly meeting o' the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Institute was held in the Dalefield Hall, Mrs Rogers presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship and the Prayer for Peace. Mrs W. Neilsen gave a very interesting report on the council meeting, at which Mrs Rogers gave a report of the year’s work of the Institute and was the winner of the rose bowl which was the prize for the best report. For the benefit of members who had been unable to attend the council meeting Mrs Rogers read her report to the institute and received a hearty vote of thanks. /The motto for the month was: “The orfe thing you do your best counts more at last than all the rest.” A letter of thanks from the Lady Galway Fund for parcels received was read by Mrs Callister. The meeting decided to hold over the parcels for the local soldie-s for a few weeks so as not to clash with the Christmas gift parcels. Mrs Nix gave an interesting demonstration of organdie work which was very much appreciated. An amusing competition, knitting a strand of wool on two short sticks, was won by Mrs Johnston. Mrs Tankersley, who had judged the flower sections, gave a demonstration on. how to decorate a floating bowl. The competitions resulted: Seniors: A floating bowl. Mrs Ross Gallon 1. As a result of the competitions 20 cakes and a good assortment of biscuits will be sent to the Army, Navy and Air Force Chib. Shoulder sprays were presented to Mrs Nix, Mrs Tankersley, and Mrs A. Knutson (the judge of the competitions). The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close. OBITUARY MRS JANET HUNT. After an illness extending over a long period there died at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr E. Williams, Park Road, Carterton, an old and respected resident in the person of Mrs Janet Hunt .wife of Mr J. D. Hunt. The deceased who was 77 years of age was born at Gateacre, near Liverpool, England. She came to New Zealand with her husband and family and resided m Wellington for a time before coming on to Carterton where her husband followed the calling of a nurseryman. For some years they have lived in Park Road. She is survived by her husband and a family of two sons and two daughters. The sons are Messrs James Lindsay Hunt (Carterton), and Daniel Hunt (Wellington), and the daughters Mesdames E. Williams (Carterton), and Mrs Janet Reading (Masterton). The funeral will be a private one.

Personal Items. Corporal Lloyd K. Burch, an old boy of Wairarapa High School, who went to England with the Second Echelon, is visiting his aunt, Mrs W. T. York, High Street. Carterton. Church Parade. Forty members of the Carterton branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association attended Divine Service at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church on Sunday evening. They lined up in front of their meeting room and headed by Pipe-Major Johns, playing the bagpipes, marched to the church. The Rev.W. J. Couling, who is a returned soldier, was an Army Chaplain in the last war. preached to a crowded church. He took for his text “No man having put his hand to the plough and looking back is fit for the Kingdom of Heaven.” Special hymns for the occasion were rendered by the choir. Armistice Day. At 11 a.m. yesterday a two-minutes silence was was observed in Carterton. At the Cenotaph in Memorial Square a number of returned soldiers gathered and a beautiful wreath was placed on the Soldiers' Memorial by Messrs A. T. Murray (chairman) and A. G. Rabbit!-; (secretary) of the Carterton branch of I the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
