Best Staying Three-year-old.
In finishing ahead of the Derby winners, Pandect and Lucrative, in the Melbourne Cup, Tidal Wave proved himself the best staying three-year-old in Australia. Tidal Wave was the toppriced colt, at 1450gns, at the national sales last year, and he has to his credit two successes, the second and hisonly one so far as a three-year-old being the Rosehill Guineas. By Tiderace, Tidal Wave is a half-brother to the last New Zealand Cup winner, Yours Truly. The St Legers will give him a further chance of establishing a reputation as a stayer. Well Known Trainer’s Death. The death has occurred at his home. Mount Albert. Auckland, of Mr Samuel Tooman, aged 81. The late Mr Tooman was associated with racing for many years as both owner and trainer, among his charges being the successful steeplechaser Beau Cavalier.
