CONTROL OF ALIENS

APPOINTMENT OF DISTRICT AUTHORITIES. SERVICE WITHOUT PAYMENT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The personnel of aliens authorities for the police districts in the Dominion was announced yesterday by the Min-

ister of Justice, Mr Mason. He said that each of the appointees, as a contribution to the Dominion's war effort, had offered to carry out the work without payment of any fee, and he expressed the Government’s appreciation of these generous offers, which had been accepted. The Minister explained that the appointments were made under the authority of the Aliens Emergency Regulations, 1940, which provided for an immediate investigation into the affairs and a classification of all enemy aliens in the Dominion, as well as oi such persons of enemy origin or associations as were brought within the scope of the regulations by special order, and of such other aliens (nonenemy aliens) as were required by the. Minister to be classified. The investigation was being carried out by officers of the Police Department and the classification would be the responsibility of the aliens authorities now appointed. The members of the Aliens Appeal Tribunal (his Honour Mr Justice Callan, Colonel C. H. Weston. K.C., and Mr J. H. Collins) were being appointed as aliens authorities for the Wellington police district, but would continue to act as members of the Appeal Tri-, bunal.

Following the example of the Home Secretary in England, and having regard to the fact that the work required the sifting of evidence, the Minister said he had. in making the appointments, chosen men of eminence in the legal profession for the positions. The. members of the authorities were as follows: — Whangarei, Mr Douglas Ross; Auckland, Messrs F. L. G. West, A. H Johnstone, K.C.. G. P. Finlay; Hamilton, Mr S. Lewis, of Cambridge; Gisborne, Mr A. A. Whitehead: Napier Mr C. H. Bisson; New Plymouth, Mi W. H. Woodward. S.M.; Wanganui Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M.; Palmerston North. Mr J. P. Innes; Nelson, Mr J Glasgow, Senr.; Greymouth, Mr W. D 1 Taylor; Christchurch, Mr K. M. Gresson; Timaru, Mr W. D. CampbellDunedin. Mr H. L. Cook; Invercargill Mr Eustace Russell.
