MASTERTON CLUB PAST SEASON REVIEWED. MANY MEMBERS ON ACTIVE SERVICE. "Owing to the inclement weather and the outbreak of war during the past year the club has not progressed as may have been anticipated after the close of last season” states the annual report of the Masterton Amateur Swimming and Life-Saving Club. The report, which is signed by the president, Mr. H. P. Glen and the secretary. Mr. R E. Barnes, and will be presented at the annual meeting to be held in the Kia Ora Hockey Club rooms at 7.30 o’clock on Wednesday night, states, inter alia:— “The club membership in the senior men’s section has been adversely effected by the war, and we congratulate the following members who have joined His Majesty’s Forces, for active service—Jim Barnes. Jim Hewett, Gil Gaze, Harold Dixon. Phil O’Neill, Monty Newland, Finlay Milne. Dave O'Connor. Lloyd Maguire and Norman Brown. The membership in the junior section has been well maintained, but the ladies section has been very disappointing and we must endeavour to gain more lady members during the coming season. Although there were many postponements during the season, the weekly aggregate competitions were keenly contested, particularly in the junior and intermediate sections. Members of our club competed with credit at carnivals held at Carterton, Greytown, Lower Hutt and Eketahuna. The following have won club trophies during the season: —H. M. Peacock Memorial cup (junior girls’ championship), M. Cruickshank; H. M. Peacock Memorial cup (junior boys’ championship), F. Sexton; A. A. Wilson cup (Wairarapa Primary School championship), F. Sexton; F. Yule cup (intermediate girls championship), A. Stains; Jack Barnes Cup (intermediate boys’ championship), T. Burns; J. J. Barnes cup (ladies’ championship), Mrs. G. Corke; IT. E. Pither cup (senior men’s championship). Jack Barnes; breaststroke cup, F. Milne; A. W. Hollings cup (junior boys’ dive), E. Rollings; V. B. McKeague cup ■ (junior girls’ dive), N. Stains; C. Spiers cup (ladies’ dive'), N. Spiers; club cup (men’s dive), V. McKeague; club cup (intermediate dive, boys), E. Braggins; club cup (intermediate girls’ dive). M. Phillips. It is worthy to note here that Jack Barnes has now been senior champion of the club for the past 11 years. One carnival was held during the year, and after being postponed on account of bad weather, the attendance of both spectators and competitors was most disappointing. The club dance held during the year was a success, and we wish to thank the enthusiastic and able ladies’ committee for their assistance, without which we could not have these pleasant social gatherings. We would like to see a greater attendance of our club members at these annual dances.

The club sponsored a girls’ interhouse swimming evening during the year and this event proved very popular. There was a good attendance of the public at this evening and, the girls entered into the various events with enthusiasm. Good progress was made during the year towards the new, baths project, but after the outbreak of war it was agreed that this matter should stand over in the meantime. The club acknowledges with thanks, donations of cups from Messrs H. E. Pither, V. McKeague and Jack Barnes, and donations from Messrs H. P. Glen, F. O’Connor, J. Bruce, J. W. Colquhoun, G. W. Barr, G. Gaze and the Wairarapa Interhouse Association. The thanks of the club are tendered to all officials who so ably assisted at the carnival and weekly swims; to the honorary auditor. Mr D. B. Curry; to the club coach, Jack Barnes; to the club’s delegate to the Wellington Centre, Mr K. Spry; to the club's delegate to the Royal Life Saving Society, Mr I. McHardy; to the custodian of the baths, Mr J. Dooling; to the Press; to tht Kia Ora Hockey Club for use of rooms, and to all members who helped the club during the difficult year.”
