INDUSTRIES MINISTER

VISIT TO WOOLPACK FACTORY HOPES OF MAKING DOMINION SELF-SUPPORTING. AND DEVELOPING EXPORT TO AUSTRALIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) FOXTON, This Day. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Sullivan), accompanied by Mr L. G. Lowry, M.P. for Otaki, Mr L. Schmidt (Secretary of the Department of Industries), and Mr A. P. Grant, Public Works Engineer, paid a surprise visit to Foxton yesterday for the purpose of viewing the factories controlled by the New Zealand Woolpack and Textiles, Ltd. The party was shown over the works by Mr F. W. Vickerman, managing director, and others. Stating that the people of Foxton were doing a good job, Mr Sullivan said it was hoped to make New Zealand self-supporting so far as woolpacks were concerned, and then to supply some to Australia, which used approximately 2,250,000 packs per annum. “I am sure she would buy from us when we have them available,” said the Minister, “and I had some preliminary talks on the matter when in Australia recently. Then there are grain sacks by the thousand used in New Zealand, all imported. There is no reason why these cannot be made here, and this aspect is being examined, in conjunction with a long-term development plan.”
