“HELL CORNER”
VISITED BY LORD LOTHIAN. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 7. i The British Ambassador to the United States, Lord Lothian, visited Dover yesterday to see “hell corner" as the town has been named bj’ American .journalists. He visited an R.A.F. airfield of the Fighter Command, and, after inspecting Dover Castle, was shown the secret operations room from which the evacuation of the B.E.F. from-Dunkirk was directed. Later he walked through the streets to inspect shell and bomb damage. He expressed admiration of the courageous manner in which the people of Dover are carrying on under the guns of the enemy. THE KING & QUEEN TOUR OF THE MERSEYSIDE. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY,' November 7. Their Majesties today continued their tour of bombed areas on Merseyside. They visited Liverpool and Bootle, including many residential districts which have suffered in raids. They had a kindly word for people who had lost relatives and also talked to those who had had miraculous escape:;. being buried under the debris of houses demolished by bombs. When their Majesties came to a block of flats where 12 people had been killed, the tenants gave them a wonderful reception, standing on the balconies, waving Union Jacks and joining in singing the National Anthem. Their Majesties also talked with those rendered homeless and demolition squads. Three alarms sounded during the tour, but. their Majesties continued their inspection without interruption.
