RED CROSS SOCIETY

, MASTERTON SUB-CENTRE MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, Mrs G. G. Tolhurst presided. The Knitting Group reported that during October a large number of garments were completed, including garments knitted from wool provided by the Wellington Red Cross depot. It was decided that the final meeting of the year would be held on Wednesday, November 27, and that the Group then go into recess until after the Christmas holidays. It was reported that the Sewing Group dispatched its fifth case of goods for distressed British civilians on November 4 . This case consisted of blankets, including four new pairs which had been donated, and clothes for boys of 4 to 12 years, of age. Parcels of clothing are still coming in freely. It was decided that the Red Cross Society’s room be closed for sewing from the last Friday in November until the Christmas holidays. During that time the convenors would open the room and be present one day of each week. It was reported that the Hospital Auxiliary was making regular visits to the hospital and doing all possible for the comfort of the soldiers there.

Mr Lee referred to the co-operation of the Red Cross Society in the work of assisting in the raising of money for the .£1,000,000 Patriotic Appeal. He asked that two members be appointed to represent the Masterton Sub-Centre on the Executive Committee and Mrs Alexander and Miss Diggins were appointed to act in this capacity. Owing to her inability to attend the meeting, Mrs Tolhurst tendered her resignation as the representative of the Sub-Centre on the Mayoress' Patriotic Committee, and Mrs Garland was ap pointed to take her place. It was reported that the National War Funds Council was considering the question of allocating a sum of , money for the relief of ex-soldiers who, since their return to the Dominion from war service have lost their sight.
