HEAVY RAIN

IN WAIRARAPA YESTERDAY STREETS FLOODED IN TOWNS. MID-WINTER CONDITIONS. Steady rain which set in late yesterday afternoon later increased to a torrential downpour and resulted in many workers in. Masterton being caught and thoroughly soaked on their way home. At about 6.45 o'clock there was a veiy heavy shower and water tables were soon filled and overflowed on to the footpaths. Throughout the night the rain fell steadily, although at 8 o’clock there were signs of the weather clearing. In places there was thick fog last night but later the wind changed to the south and rain again set in. There are no reports of flooding in the district, as the cold southerly wind has not melted the snow which has fallen on the ranges. The Ruamahanga and Waipoua livers are only carrying a slight fresh. In Masterton during the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. today, 1.29 inches of rain were registered. Slight Hooding has occurred at Longbush. CARTERTON. From the “Times-Age” representative in Carterton it is learned that between seven and eight o'clock last night a phenomenally heavy downpour of rain deluged the town and countryside. The water tables in the business and. residential areas in Carterton were unable to cope with the rain which flooded many streets. When the downpour ceased the warm ground caused a heavy fog to develop and became so thick that visibility was restricted to 40 yards. Heavy rain commenced again after midnight. GREYTOWN. Apart from surface water there are few signs of the heavy rain experienced at Greytown last night. There are no reports of flooding.
