KEEPING COOL
THE PROBLEM FOR SUMMER. HERE ARE SOME USEFUL HINTS Soon your summer frocks will have ousted winter woollies from the wardrobe. Keeping cool will be the problem for the next few months. If you’re one of those people who feel wilted in hot weather, here are some tips to follow for the summer days ahead. Remember, it’s as important to look cool as to feel cool. There’s a splendid psychological lift in achieving the appearance which causes people to say "My dear, you look SO fresh, and dainty.” Washing-frocks, immaculately clean,, as much white as your laundry bill will permit, make-up designed to stand a hot day, will all help to achieve that effect. Start the day with a lukewarm bath —blood-heat, no more. The juice of two lemons, a cupful of vinegar, or a tablespoonful of tincture of benzoin make cool, refreshing bath lotions, or if the skin is irritable —it often is in hot weather —add a tablespoonful of soda bicarbonate to the water, and use a specially soothing talc. Rise an Hour Earlier. Get up an hour earlier during hot weather and get all the strenuous jobs done before the sun is high; or, if you’re a career girl, take a walk in the park or do an hour’s gardening while the world is still fresh and dewy.
You can make up your sleep by having an after-lunch nap, or going to bed earlier.
Keep your diet light and simple, rich in vitamins and roughage. Bran, cereals, salads, fruit, fresh and stewed, eggs, cheese and milk should figure largely on your menus; but go slow with sweets and alcohol, and remember that iced drinks are unkind to the complexion. Take plenty of cold water though, and here's a cooling complexion drink which is very popular in the tropics: Split and stone Alb of prunes, and put them in a pan with a quart of water, 3oz of sugar, and the rind of a lemon. Bring to the boil, and boil rapidly for two minutes, then allow to simmer for half an hour. Stir, add the juice of two lemons, strain and serve very cold.
Uss Complexion Milk. Give your skin a change of diet. Use a complexion milk in place of cream. Instead of your rich skin food use a light complexion cream.
To prevent the pores from enlarging —the skin tendency in hot weathergive the face a pore-refining masque once a week.
Control perspiration by using a good deodorant preparation. Comfort hot. tired feet by soaking them in cold salt water (a handful of kitchen salt to two quarts of water). If they are swollen use warm water and add two teaspoonfuls of iodine. When the water becomes clear you'll know that the skin has absorbed the iodine, and you'll notice, too, that the swelling has gone. Feet which perspire should be bathed in a solution of disinfectant in the proportion of one dessertspoonful to one quart of water.
When dry, spray the feet with astrin- , gent and dust on an anti-perspirant 1 powder. Wash Hair More Often. Wash the hair twice as often as usual and. if the head has been allowed to get hot, massage the scalp with bay rum. hair tonic or friction lotion —for dried perspiration causes dandruff. The smart “up" styles are just right for hot weather —there’s nothing so hot as hair round the face —so, even if to date' you've been a reactionary, “put up" your hair now. On those mornings when the sky hap the brassy look which means heat with a capital H. give your exercises a miss, but standing in the nude before an open window—this air bath conditions the skin —deep-breathe for . five minutes. Finish with a few rhythmical stretching movements. When Applying Make-up.
Remove, and while the face is slightly damp apply your make-up. This gives it a dewy look. Use a pinky-red rouge—this looks cooler than yellow or purple tones — apply your foundation lotion and peachy powder, and stroke on a not too greasy lipstick. Blot the mouth carefully with tissues, and powder over your eye shadow —shiny lips and lids look hot. Choose a shade of blue or green eye shadow. Brush the lashes with a midnight blue lash cream in place of mascara. If you flush unbecomingly with the heat, use a pale green foundation cream, and dust the cheeks with green powder under your usual tint. Keep Your Hands Cool. Keep the hands cool and dry by using an astringent hand lotion. 'When, heat-wave or no. exercise you must, put boracic in your walking and tennis shoes —this prevents the rubber soles from drawing your feet—and be really extravagant with your talcum. Positively pour it into your stockings and see that there is a layer of it be-
tween you and your brassiere and girdle.
Unless you want to catch a chill, and miss your summer fun, put on a sweater or cardigan between sets and when you cool off from your hike. As soon as possible change your undies and give yourself an all-over rub down with cool water to which you have added a dash of eau-de-Cologne. Before making the face up after a long, hot day try this pick-up treatment. After cleansing, take a large piece of wool, pull holes in it for eyes nose and mouth, soak it in skin tonic, and, having pressed it over the face, relax for ten minutes.
