CROSSING SMASH
MOTOR CAR WRECKED. DRIVER’S LUCKY ESCAPE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DANNEVIRKE, November 4. Mr Robert Chester Daley, a Salvation Army officer, who lives in Wellington, had a lucky escape this morning when the car in which he was driving was struck on the Tahoraiti level crossing by the down express train from Napier. Mr Daley was travelling north, and when near the crossing signalled to another car coming from the opposite direction for- the driver to stop, in order to advise him that the road at Papatawa was under water. When the occupants of the other car —Messrs Kess, Stevens and E. J. Wall —had passed, Mr Daley proceeded to cross the line, but the engine stalled when his car was on the line. He got out to use the hand starter when Messrs Stevens and Wall, looking back, noticed the express train approaching. They called out to Mr Daley, who just managed to jump clear as the engine struck the stationary vehicle, completely wrecking it.
