WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT NIREAHA. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Nireaha Women’s Institute was held yesterday, Mrs N. Terry presiding over a large attendance of members and visitors. The meeting opened with the Ode to Friendship and the Prayer for Peace. A letter was read from Corporal Donaldson, an overseas soldier, thanking the Institute for a parcel received, the contents of which were greatly appreciated. The parcel had been made up by Mrs J. Hawkins, whose name was enclosed in the parcel. It was decided to hold the annual Institute picnic on December 28. Mrs Wilkin gave an interesting report on the business dealt with at the recent Bush Federation Council meeting held at Eketahuna, for which she received a hearty vote of thanks.
For the December meeting it was agreed that all members provide a tin of biscuits or cakes, from which parcels will be made up and sent to Nireaha soldiers on active service.
The competitions for the month resulted as follows: “Something new from something old; a garment for a refugee girl”: Mrs J. Hawkins 1, Mrs R. Thomasen 2, Mrs J. Drysdale and Mrs J. O'Neil, equal, 3. The best collection of pansies resulted: Mrs J. P. Petersen 1, Mrs W. Drysdale 2, Mrs J. Hawkins 3. Best bloom: Miss Betty Drysdale 1, Miss Betty Drysdale and Mrs H. Nordell, equal, 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames C. Mills and J. O’Neil.
FIRE BRIGADE MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last night, Superintendent H. E. Rogers presiding over a moderate attendance of members. Accounts amounting to £1 13s 6d were passed for payment. It was decided that the brigade be represented at a gold star presentation function at Waipukurau on November 23. Mr Geoff. Daniel was elected messenger to the brigade. Secretary S. Daniel gave an interesting explanation of the proposed activities of the Home Guard, for which he was thanked.
Guy Fawkes Day. Guy Fawkes Day activities were this year on a much smaller scale tnan usual in Eketahuna. This was chiefly accounted for by the fact that fireworks were in short supply, and th’e Fire Brigade had to forego its annual bon fire this year. Heavy showers of rain at dusk marred what few fires were lit in the town.
