MARTINBOROUGH
SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Martinborough District High School Committee there were present: Messrs E. C. Sadd (chairman), K. Arthur (secretary), J. A. Beveridge, G. P. Cotter, R. Lawrence, F. B. Wright, and the headmaster (Mr D. C. Pryor). The Wellington Education Board wrote agreeing to pay a subsidy on the library. The Board drew attention to the excessive amount of water used. It was resolved that the Borough Council be requested to have the water meter tested. A letter was received from the Wellington Education Board agreeing to pay the cost connected with the repairing of the fence round the school ground. Notice was received of the transfer of Miss Collier and Mr A. J. Lane to other schools on account of the falling off in the attendance and the consequent loss of grade. The headmaster said that the attendance had since risen, and the former grade was now maintained. He had notified the Board accordingly. It was resolved that the committee support the (headmaster’s protest in the matter.
Accounts amounting to £IG 7s 2d were passed for payment. Messrs Arthur and McNally were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month. Personai. Having accepted a call to Akaroa, the Rev. John Mann, of the Martinborough Presbyterian Church, will leave for his annual holiday on November 12, prior to taking up his new charge. He will be inducted at Akaroa on December 12. He will be tendered a farewell social on Monday night. Home Guard. The parade of the Home Guard last night showed a great improvement in the matter of attendance, and several more members were sworn in. Two members of the Permanent Force were in attendance, and drilled the men. Guy Fawkes Day. Guy Fawkes was celebrated in the usual manner by the juveniles of the town. The boys have donated their takings to the Red Cross Society. In the evening bonfires were numerous, the principal one being conducted by St. Andrew’s Bible Class. During the evening a collection was taken up in aid of the patriotic appeal.
