EFFORT BY SCHOOLS
FIFTH OF NOVEMBER COLLECTIONS. CENTRAL AND MASTERTON WEST. Following the lead of the Wellington schools, the pupils of the Masterton Central School decided to give the proceeds of their “guy” collections this year to the Provincial Patriotic Fund, and again following Wellington’s lead, decided to have a parade of “guys” through the town. Led by the school drum and trumpet band, the “guy” owners duly paraded, while the girls of Form 2 took up a collection en route. The band was in excellent form and the guys were very varied in appearance, so that much interest was taken in the effort. As a result of this voluntary piece of work the sum of £7 16s is to be handed over to the Provincial Patriotic Fund. Mr J.’P. Farrell, headmaster of Masterton West School, stated this morning that with the latest amounts io hand a total of £lO 15s has been raised by the children of West School and will be allocated to the London Distress Fund. The majority of the sum raised was the result of direct giving by the pupils, who went without their fireworks, and only a small proportion was raised by collection on Guy Fawkes morning.
