CARTERTON

BOY SCOUTS MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Boy Scout management committee was held last evening in the Scout Den, Mr Morris presiding. There were also present Messrs C. E. White (acting secretary), H. T. Ray, A. Patterson, M. Boden, L. Boden, C. J. Delacey, Fairbrother (Scoutmaster), Mesdames A. Thompson, A. Patterson, Misses Eagle and Herdman. The question of forming a fife and drum band was discussed. The Scoutmaste>- stated that it was not possible to get an instructor, and as a substitute he had been advised that a mouth organ band would be suitable. He already had several boys who could play the mouth organ and others were anxious to learn. It was resolved that half a dozen mouth organs be purchased by the committee, the same to be the property of the committee. It was decided that the training of the boys would be commenced next scout night and that the band commence practice immediately. It was decided to rent the Den to members of the Pipe Band once a week for practices. Messrs Fairbrother and White were given power to purchase a first aid outfit locally for the Scouts. The donation of £1 for the purchase of mouth organs for the Scouts was received with thanks. The matter of purchasing timber for tent poles was left to Mr A*. Patterson. The treasurer reported that a further £5 3s 6d had been handed over to the Patriotic funds being money received from the card parties. It was decided that card parties be held on December 23 and 30 and that the proceeds be divided equally between the Scouts and the Patriotic funds. Miss Herdman was authorised to purchase material for a Cub Pack flag.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the Carterton School Committee was to have been held last evening but as there was not a quorum present only the treasurer’s statement and the passing of accounts were considered. Those present were Messrs H. J. McKenzie (chairman), W. E. Knowles (secretary), J. Finn (treasurer), P. Beere and the Headmaster, Mr Martin. The treasurer reported the general account to be in credit to the amount , of £63 4s 2d. and that after accounts had been paid amounting to £3O- 12s 2d there remained a credit balance of £32 12s. The special account was in credit £43 9s lOd. Accounts amounting to £lB 5s were passed for payment, leaving a credit to this fund of £25 4s lOd. The accounts were passed for payment subject to confirmation at next meeting. ORDER OF DRUIDS TOTARA LODGE MEETING. Arch Druid Bro. W. Fryer presided over a meeting of the Totara Lodge No. 3 U.A.0.D., held last night. Bro James F. 'Corlett notified that he had enlisted for military service overseas with the N.Z.E.F. Bros. W. Rossiter and lan D. Howie reported having entered the Masterton Hospital for treatment. Two declarations off the sick funds were received, and three members on the sick funds furnished certificates that they were still unfit to resume their ordinary occupation. Sick pay and accounts amounting to £2l 13s 9d, which included £2 10s from the Social Security Department, were passed fc for payment. The next lodge night, November 18, will be quarter night, when contributions are due and nomination and election of officers will take place. The secretary reported that five members of the lodge were at present serving with the second N.Z.E.F. overseas, and that several members were in the various training camps.

BOWLING CLUB COMMITTEE MEETING. The first meeting of the newly-elect-ed management committee of the Carterton Bowling Club was held in the club pavilion last evening. Mr Gordon Hughan (president) was in the chair. There was a full attendance of members with the exception of Mr H. Simmonds, from whom an apology was received. A letter was received from the Wairarapa Centre relative to the annual fixture with the Manawatu Centre at Palmerston North on Saturday, December 7, also concerning a patriotic tournament to be held on the Masterton greens. In connection with the latter event, if there were more entries than can be accommodated on Masterton greens the Park and Carterton greens will be used. Various suggested improvements and renovations were discussed and will be carried into effect immediately. A large number of applications for membership, both ladies and men, were received and will be balloted for next Saturday. To create interest in the club’s activities, as far as the billiard table is concerned, Mr Carl Larsen, a member of the committee, has donated a special cue for competition. This cue has a history and will be worth competing for. Some years ago Mr Larsen played the New Zealand champion, Clark Machonicie, on a handicap break and beat him and this particular cue was his reward. Personal Items.
