BETTER FOOD

COOKS HAVE MORE SCOPE, CONDITIONS IN EGYPT; Writing from Egypt, where the Australian Imperial Force is standing alongside the New Zealanders, ready for any action required of them. lan Fitchett. official correspondent with the A.1.F.. says that conditions for the Australians have considerably improved. Fitchett, in this despatch released by the Australian Trade Commissioner in New Zealand (Mr C. E. Critchley), speaks chiefly of food. He says: “The rations are much the same, but cooking facilities are infinitely better, and the cooks arc able to do justice to the excellent Queensland frozen beef. "For months, owing' to a shortage of timber, they had to cook on oil stoves which they wore unable to master. Now. with huge modern ranges and plentiful supplies of timber and coal, they are working feverishly to regain their lost reputation. "The task of the A.S.C. here in delivering supplies is not as difficult as it has been and they can now deliver meat at the ideal time for thawing out in tl]e best possible condition. There is, also, more plentiful supply of green vegetables. "All the bread consumed by the Australians at present is baked by the New Zealand Field Bakery. The New Zealanders are very proud of the fact and quote it as a further sign of Empire. ‘We-get your wheat and give you back our bread —you’ll never get better.' said a New Zealand baker to me recently. "The price of food in the canteens has come down considerably and more green vegetables are to be obtained but the price of Australian beer has gone up ltd and is now Is 5d a bottle."

Sum of the cable news on tills page as is so headed has appeared in “The Times,” and is cabled to Australia and New Zealand by special permission. It should be understood that the opinions are not those of "The Times'’ unless expressly stated to be so.
