AT HEAVY ODDS
ANSON PLANE BEATS OFF SIX ATTACKERS. GERMANS BREAK OFF ACTION. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 2. The pilot of an Anson Coastal Command aircraft, while on antisubmarine patrol off the south-east coast, recently saw 50 Junkers 88 dive-bombers crossing the coast, escorted by 60 Messerschmitt 109's. A moment later the Anson was attacked by six Messerschmitts. The British pilot threw his aircraft about the sky and dodged most of the Germans’ fire. His rear gunner put a burst of tracer bullets into one of the Messerschmitts, which retired from the fight. The Anson’s gunner kept up his hot defence and scored hits on three more of the Messerschmitts. After a few minutes the Germans, apparently discouraged by the ineffectiveness of their action, gave up the combat and rejoined their formation. The Anson, unharmed save for a few bullet holes, went on searching for submarines.
