AFRICAN TOURS
GENERAL SMUTS & MR EDEN MEETING AT KHARTOUM. FORCES READY FOR ACTION. In the course of his tour of East Africa, General Smuts met the British Secretary for War (Mr. Anthony Eden), at Khartoum on Saturday, the 8.8. C. reports. Mr. Eden has conferred with the commanders in the fighting areas and has inspected New Zealand, Australian and ‘other troops. Very good use is being made of the reinforcement and equipment sent to the African theatres and the main anxiety of the troops is to get to grips with the enemy. An official communique issued in Cairo states that British mechanised patrols have again been active in the Kassala area of the Sudan. GREATLY HEARTENED DECLARATION BY GENERAL SMUTS. NAIROBI, November 2. The South African Prime Minister, General Smuts, flew back to South Africa after a lightning tour of the Kenya front. He also visited Khartoum. “I am tremendously heartened by all I have seen." he said. VICTORY AT ODDS GAINED BY SOUTH AFRICAN PLANES. NAIROBI, November 2. A communique, states that two South African Air Force Hurricanes intercepted three Italian planes and shot down two and severely damaged the other, which is believed to have crashed. The South African planes returned.
