Lieutenant Colonel J. H. Irving, E.D., is spending leave in Masterton. Messrs A. Stevens-Jordan and J. Campbell, Ohakea, stayed recently at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton. The Rev. W. E. Moore has been unanimously' invited by a recent Methodist Church meeting to remain in Pahiatua for a fourth year. Mr L. R. Palmer, careers master at Wellington College, has resigned to take up a position on the editorial staff of the “Nelson Evening Mail.” He was met by the staff and students of the college at farewell gatherings recently, when presentations were made to him. Mr V/alter James King, of Hastings, died on Saturday from the results of an accident sustained at the Flaxmere stud on Wednesday last. Deceased was born at Waipawa 62 years ago. He entered the late Mr John Maher’s stable to whom he was indentured and after serving his apprenticeship he rode many winners at country non-totalisator meetings. Purchasing a farm at Waipukurau after his marriage* he trained many winners. Later he set up a public trainer in Hastings and also acted as private trainer to Mr C. P. Haldane and the late Mr D. H. McLeod. The death occurred at Palmerston North recently of Mr Frederic Jennings. He was born at Auckland in 1856; his mother was Susan Wakefield, a kinswoman of that family whose names are so closely associated with the early settlement of the Dominion. His mother, who was associated with the work of New Zealand’s first Bishop, and conducted a girls’ school at Auckland, died at Nelson in 1863. Mr Jennings attended Sadd's School at Nelson and married Miss Elizabeth Grooby, at Motueka, and shortly afterward came to the North Island, being an early settler of the Ashhurst and Apiti districts, where he was engaged in farming. He returned to Nelson in 1907, but for some years latterly had resided at Palmerston North with his daughter.
