ALFREDTON

YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB AN INTERESTING DEBATE. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Alfredton Young Farmers’ Club held a debate with the Masterton Young Farmers’ Club in the Alfredton Hall, there being a fair attendance of members present. Mr P. Page, of Eketahuna, acted as judge. The subject of debate was “That Heredity has a Greater Influence than Environment.” Alfredton taking the affirmative. The leaders of the teams were Messrs J. Shirtcliff and G. Blachford, and the seconders Messrs A. Heckler and S. Ross, J. Mackay and K. Donovan. The debate resulted in a win for Alfredton by 295 points to 291. At the conclusion of the debate Mr Page gave a very interesting summary. Supper was provided. SOLDIER HONOURED PRESENTATION TO LT. GEORGE. At the conclusion of the pictures on Thursday evening a large crowd assembled to do honour to Second-Lieu-tenant Trevor George. After the ladies had served supper, Mr R. W. Keb.bell, as chairman of the Patriotic Committee, made a presentation to SecondLieutenant George, mentioning the fact that although he had been absent for some years, he was essentially a local boy as his home had always been here. Mr Kebbell concluded by expressing the wishes of the gathering that their guest would experience the best of luck and a safe return. Second-Lieu-tenant Trevor George briefly replied. Mr Kebbell then took the opportunity of bringing to the notice of those present the “Heart to Heart” Appeal for which the Alfredton Riding was expected to raise £5OO. He put forward a suggestion for a house-to-house canvass for immediate cash donations and for promises to pay in February. Mr Kebbell stated that if the idea of conducting a canvass were accepted he would appreciate considerable help from the many young ladies of the district, pointing out that this was the farmers busiest season. Petrol coupons would be available where required. Finally, Mi- Kebbell called for suggestions to be laid before the committee at a meeting on Saturday evening. During the evening shoulder sprays were presented to Mrs E. George and to Miss C. George, who is staying with her mother. Personal Items. Mrs E. Hutchings has returned to her home after staying with friends. Mrs G. Yarrall has returned home after having been the guest of Mrs G. Jones, Pahiatua. Mr and Mrs F. G. Lewis and family have returned from a visit to relatives at Dannevirke. Mr A. Edmonds, who is an inmate of the Pahiatua Hospital, is progressing very favourably and is expected to be able to return to his home at the weekend. Mrs J. B. Smith, “Forest Flat,” is staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs Fleming. Wellington. Miss Cave has taken up her duties at the local school.
