S.M. COURT MONTHLY SITTING. ("Times-Age" Special.) Mr fl. P. Lawry, S.M.. presided over the monthly sitting, of the Magistrate'.; Court. Judgment was entered fur plaintiff by default in the following cases:—Tui Morgan v. W. Arthur, claim £3 2s, court costs 9s, solicitor.. lee 15s 6d; R. N. Campbell v. H. J. S. Martin, claim £9, court costs 15s, uo- * Heitor's fee 15s Gd. The police proceeded against A. A. 1 Bond for having procured possession i of a firearm otherwise than in pursuy, ance of a permit issued to him. He was fined 10s with costs 10s. W. A. Pinfold was charged by the Transport Department that on September 23 he operated a trailer (unlicensed) on the Gladstone road contrary to the Traffic Regulations, 1936. He was fined £1 with costs 10s. On a charge of knowing that a license to use such a motor vehicle had not been issued on September 23, he was fined 5s with costs 10s. The Radio Inspector proceeded against Roy Edward Ralph for having used on August 13 a wireless set when he was not the holder of a licence. He was fined £2 with costs 10s. The maintenance officer proceeded against George Burden for having failed to maintain his child under an order of the court issued at Carterton on September 21, 1938, and being in arrears to the extent of £5O 10s 6d. He was sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for two months, the warrant to be suspended so long as he paid £2 10s per fortnight until the arrears and current maintenance had been brought up to date. Helping the Blind. The members of the Carterton Women’s Institute are to be commended for the work they did at the Carterton Show to assist the Blind Institute, Auckland. The inmates of the Institute made and forwarded a consignment of wicker baskets etc., to the Women’s Institute and practically the whole of Ihe exhibits were sold at the show. Bowling. Club games to be played on the Carterton green tomorrow will commence at 2 o’clock. New members and ladies will be given instruction in the 1 game. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs G. H. Graham and Miss Jill Graham, of Stratford, are spending a few days with Mrs E. H. Hawker, L/ Kent Street. Mr and Mrs W. Abbott, of Feilding, ‘ •if were visitors to the Carterton Show. • Mr Herbert Moore, Foxton, is visit-1, ing Carterton. Members of St. Mark's Masonic Lodge gathered at the Masonic Hall on I ‘ Wednesday night and tendered a farewell social to Bro. A. J. F. Whitehead, of the Carterton railway staff, who will leave shortly for Wairoa. During the evening the W.M., Bro. Ben Sewell, referred in eulogistic terms to the personal qualities of their guest. Bro. Whitehead’s health was drunk and he was presented with a gold mounted fountain pen. Bro. Whitehead thanked ; the members for their present which he J appreciated very much.
Carrington Rainfall. Mr J. A. Roberts, Carrington, reports that the rainfall registered in October was G. 16 inches. The heaviest fall was experienced on October 8. 1.34 inches. The total rain for the year up till the end of October was 40.64 inches. These figures are the heaviest recorded this year. Soldier to be Honoured. A large attendance is expected at St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday evening when a dance will be tendered to Private Duncan Smith. With a good floor, music and supper, an enjoyable time should be spent by those attending.
