Sir Cyril Newall, Governor-General-designate of New Zealand, was invested by the King with the Order of Merit at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday, a British Official Wireless message reports. He is the first Royal AitForce officer to receive this honour. Mr M. J. Parker, of Dalefield, left yesterday to judge at the Waikato Show. Mr H. M. Christie has resigned his position as a member of the Local Government Loans Board. Mr J. W. McGlinchy has been appointed Government representative on the New Zealand Poultry Board. Messrs. Reid and Brian (Wellington), are at the Hotel Midland, Masterton,
today. The friends of Mr Charles Leach, of Dixon Street, Masterton, will regret to learn that he is laid aside with sickness and has had to enter a hospital in Wellington for treatment. The Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington, ■ Bishop of Waikato, left Wellington last night for Nelson, where he will attend 1 the induction of the new Bishop of ■ Nelson, the Rev. P. Stephenson. Messrs S. Schofield, J. Major W. Murphy, M.C., N.Z.S.C., till recently chief instructor in charge of training at Papakura mobilisation camp, and now general staff officer (second grade) at Army Headquarters, Wellington, is gazetted to the temporary rank of lieutenant-Colonel.

Kitchen; | handicappers, Messrs A. J. Morgan and > W. Grantham; starter, Mr S. Olliver. Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs W. A. Dallas, Hunterville, that their son, Sergeant Observer A. F. Dallas, has been killed in Egypt while serving with the Air Force. Before he joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force he was employed by Ross and Glendining Ltd., in Wellington. He was 22 years of age and attended the Palmerston North High School. On joining the air force he received his training at Ohakea, where he rapidly qualified. He sailed from New Zealand last March for England. A vacancy in the mathematics department at Auckland University College has been filled by the appointment of Mr H. K. Powell, M.A., Brisbane, as temporary 'lecturer. Mr Powell, who is 21, visited England on a travelling scholarshija last year. His studies at the University College, London, were cut short as a result of the war. There were 10 applicants for the position to which Mr Powell has been appointed. The vacancy was caused by the resignation of the senior lecturer in mathematics, Dr. K. E. Bullen, who has gone j to Melbourne University. i
