SURPRISE ATTACK

MADE BY BRITISH COLUMN ON ITALIANS IN WESTERN DESERT. ENEMY MOTORISED FORCE' ROUTED. An Italian advance column from Sidi irrani, the 8.8. C. reports, was cleverely attacked by a British column whose members crept within 8000 yards of the enemy. They lay there undiscovered until night and then opened fire. They were also assisted by aircraft. The Italian force, which included a large number of motorised vehicles was taken completely by surprise and retreated in confusion, without retaliating. During the bombardment huge fires were observed.
