ENEMY FORMATIONS BROKEN

About 160 raiders, mostly fighter-, jombers, tried to reach London during three alerts today. A very small proportion penetrated the outer defences. During the first raid, high-exlosives demolished two houses in London. A man was killed. A number of people were killed or. wounded, several seriously, when a London crypt was directly hit. Another bomb hit a London hospital mortuary and narrowly missed a ward in which there were 50 patients. Seven bombs fell in a district in which there were no casualties. A bomb damaged an institution for crippled children in south-east England Water poured from broken pipes and seven children were slightly injured. A cook and housemaid were killed. The north-east coast last night had its longest air raid thus far. High explosives were dropped at five points. The damage was slight and the casualties few. London offices of foreign banks damaged in recent raids include those of the National City Bank of New York, in Old Broad Street, and of the Yokohama Specie Bank, Bishopgate. Three Polish pilots training in Britain, sent on a trial flight in a bombladen plane, were .not sighted for hours. Eventually they returned and reported that they had visited Germany and discharged their bombs. NAZI “REPRISALS” (Received This Day, 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, October 29. A German communique admits that eight planes have not returned from raids over England last night and says reprisals continue against London, also that R.A.F. planes last night were over Germany and bombed residential quarters, when several persons were killed.
