ENEMY PLANES ROUGHLY HANDLED MET & ROUTED ON COAST. NIGHT BOMBING OF LONDON. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 29. The German air raiders yesterday encountered a severe handling from the Royal Air Force, whose fighter pilots did their utmost to rout them before they crossed the coast. The majority of the raiders hurriedly unloaded their bombs and made off homeward. Last night raiders were over Wales, Liverpool, north-east England, the Midlands, and north-east Scotland. Single planes visited London at intervals. The attacks began soon after darkness, reaching their intensity at midnight and continuing till the early hours of this morning. In the London area shops, houses and business premises were damaged. Fires were started by a large number of incendiary bombs. In. the Midlands fires were also started, but they were quickly brought under control. British bombers last night continued their programme of successful attacks on military objectives in Germany and on ports in enemy-occupied territory. FOUR NAZI PLANES SHOT DOWN ON MONDAY. I NO BRITISH LOSSES. : (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) LONDON, October 29. The Air Ministry reports that four German aircraft were shot down in yesterday’s raids on England. There were no British losses.
