ITALY’S FELONY
DISGUST IN THE UNITED STATES ANOTHER NATION KNIFED IN THE NI,GHT. PRESIDENT'S EXPRESSION OF SORROW. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, October 29. In a speech in New York last night, President Roosevelt said: “I am sure/you will all feel sorrow in your hearts, as I do, that the Italian and Greek people are engaged in a conflict.” He added that his day had been an anxious one because of the outbreak of another war. Newspapers throughout the Empire and the United States express disgust at the Italian invasion of Greece. The “New York Times” Says that this unprovoked assault, launched with the flimsiest excuse, is no surprise as one has become accustomed to the tactics of the Axis Powers. The “New York Herald-Tribune” eees in it an admission that the assault on Britain has failed. In Britain, “The Times” heads its leading articles with “The Italian Felony.” It traces the now familiar tactics of the Axis Powers —threats, lies, ultimatums and invasion, “The Times” praises the behaviour of Greece in maintaining a policy of strict neutrality and good neighbourliness, and adds: “Her cause is ours. Britain will act up to her promises.” The “Daily Mail” says that Greece has joined the long list of nations to have been knifed in the night. Britain’s position is clear. She will have to defend that end of the Mediterranean. GAYDA’S FAIRY TALES ALLEGATIONS AGAINST BRITAIN. ROME. October 28. Virginio Gayda, in the “Giornale d’ltalia,” alleges that Greece ceded 30 bases to Britain and that the British planned to occupy Crete with troops from Egypt. Greece provoked conflicts on the Albanian frontier in open complicity with England. The “Giornale d’ltalia” says great Greek troop activity in the mountains on the Albanian frontier beyond Konispoli is reported, while columns of lorries are moving continuously on the Florina road. ITALIAN CLAIMS PENETRATION OF GREEK TERRITORY. (Received This Day, 9 a.m.) LONDON, October 29. The latest reports from Athens indicate that most of the fighting is taking 'place in the north-west corner of Greece. The Italians claim that they have already penetrated Greek territory and that the penetration is continuing. There is no confirmation of a naval action between British and Italian forces. Official circles in London say it is quite improbable that it has yet occurred.
