TERRITORIAL CAMPS
CONFLICT WITH FARMERS’ BUSY ALTERNATIVE TRAINING PERIOD SUGGESTED. "From our experience of the appeals which have come before us in this district it seems unfortunate for the farming community and for the Territorial Force that the time for the Territorial camp should have been fixed for the busy farming season." stated the chairman of the Masterton Man Power Committee. Mr. T. Jordan .at the first public sitting of the commiltee yesterday afternoon. "The seasonal work is at its peak and while farmers as a whole have shown an anxiety to meet the need for training, they are faced with serious difficulties in meeting the demands for labour and services necessary to maintain, if not increase the annual production of the industry.” said Mr. Jordan. “If the period of training could be arranged to commence at the expiration of the busy season—say from the beginning of April—many of these difficulties would disappear and the training would be able to proceed smoothly and efficiently. “It has been said that the choice of Waiouru as a training centre has some bearing cn the time chosen for the training. The committee knows nothing of this, but if it has any bearing on the question it might not be too late to consider re-establishing an all-the-year camp, say at Featherston, for the duration of the war where the climatic conditions are more favourable for this course.”
