FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM

Pearce Handicap Won by Belle Cane ROYAL CHIEF ACCOUNTS FOR STAKES AUGMENT WINS EASILY (BY "THE GRAFTER.")

At the final day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting at Trentham yesterday Belle Cane won the Pearce Handicap by half a length from Serenata. Royal Chief had a comfortable win in the Harcourt Stakes, heading Sir Cameron by two lengths. The Mastertoil horse, Augment, went exceptionally well to easily win the Tararua Handicap.

The loss of the holiday through weather postponement was reflected in the totalisator returns at Trentham yesterday. There was still a very good attendance, but nothing approaching a holiday crowd. Some of the fields were also weakened through horses returning home. All things considered, however, the results of the meeting were very satisfactory. Racing yesterday was held in fine but cool weather, the westerly wind still prevailing. The race track had not fully recovered from the soaking it received at the weekend and the going was soft and slow.

The feature event, the Harcourt Stakes, drew only three opponents for Royal Chief; and he was able to win easily in very slow time. In the handicaps the three-year-old filly Belle Cane added further lustre to her record by a fine win in the Pearce Handicap, and Not Out won the sprint.

The totalisator handled £59,474 10s for the day, a decrease of £31,854 for the day, last year being the Labour Day holiday. With the increases shown on’both the preceding days this deficit was reduced to £9,346 for the meeting, the figures for this year being £190,065 as against £199,411 twelve months ago. Results: —

Belle Cane’s Splendid Effort. The three-year-old filly Belle Cane, a warm favourite, put up an exceptionally good effort to win the Pearce Handicap at Trentham yesterday. She was a long way back in the early stages and it was not until the home turn that she began to improve her position. Finally, by getting a good run through on the fence from the false rail she was able to come on and challenge Serenata who, never further back than second when settled down, had drawn clear of the others. Serenata hung on well, but Belle Cane was too good for her. Kilometre, well back early with only two behind him, staged a great run home to beat Meamea for third. Meamea was also in the rear in the early running, but he had moved up before reaching the straight' and was dying away again over the last half furlong. The best of the others were White Rajah Cone of the leaders throughout). Master Cyklon, Amigo, who did not get the best c4‘ passages. Old Surrey and Homily. Windsor Chief got left. Royal Chief Wins Easily. With only four runners in the Har-1 court Stakes at the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting yesterday, Royal Chief touched a very short price, but lie was never likely to taste defeat. The pace was only a canter early, but it increased when Sir Cameron, who had I sidled away at the start and lost ground, ran through to the front passing the seven furlongs, and with To Kawiti made the pace from Royal Chief, who for a while joined them, only to be restrained in behind again on the home turn. Te Kawiti headed off Sir Cameron at the false rail, where Royal Chief ranged alongside and soon ran to the front to win decisively. Sir Cameron finished on again at the end and comfortably beat Te Kawiti for second.
