HUMANE ENEMY

ITALIAN SUBMARINE COMMANDER SEQUEL TO DESTRUCTION OF BELGIAN SHIP. CREW TAKEN SAFELY TO MADEIRA. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 1 p.m.) LISBON, October 27.

An Italian submarine commander ordered the crew of the Belgian cargo steamer Kebalo to their boats before sinking the ship by gunfire. The submarine, after indicating the course for Madeira, made off, promising to return next morning if the weather were worse. The promise was kept, but it was impossible to tow the boats. The commander took the crew aboard the submarine, where they stayed for 36 hours. They were finally sent ashore at Madeira in rubber boats.
