The enforced closing of hotel bars at 8 p.m. instead of 11 p.m. led Io a disturbance in Brisbane on Saturday night when soldiers on leave and also former A.I.F. men clashed x with the uniformed and military police. A thousand civilians participated in a raid on one hotel, from which they secured a barrel of beer, resulting in a melee during which fists were used freely.

Reinforcements of military police arrived and the chief offenders were escorted from the scene. The police dispersed the civilians.
